Dame Tessa Jowell: New Labour minister who became London 2012 political champion

The former cabinet minister died yesterday, after being diagnosed with brain cancer previous year.

The Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Research Mission covers several of the late politician's requests, including improved tests to detect tumours.

A statement by her family said it was "with great sadness and an enormous sense of loss" that they announced the news of her death.

As Culture Secretary, she convinced Blair to push for the Olympic games, which proved a person triumph for her when the bid for the 2012 games was successful.

"In addition to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in recent months doctors tried innovative new treatments which Tessa gladly embraced, but sadly the tumour recently progressed very quickly".

Prime Minister Theresa May said the dignity and courage with which Dame Tessa had confronted her illness was "humbling" and "inspirational", and her campaigning was a "lasting tribute to a lifetime of public service".

"It was a hard enough process at the best of times, but that structure she put in place then weathered the financial crisis (of 2008) and then allowed us in the end to still deliver the Olympics on time and under budget". The family said the funeral would be small and private, but a memorial open to all would be held later.

Along with its commitment to invest £40m in a Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Research Fund, the government has reconfirmed in its statement tonight that 5-ALA will be given to all patients who could benefit from its use, regardless of where they are treated.

Lord Sebastian Coe, president of the IAAF and former chairman of the London organising committee of the Olympic Games, said London 2012 would not have happened without Dame Tessa.

Having pushed the British government to bid for the Olympics, her joy on securing the games for London was short-lived.

Former acting leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harman, who lived in Dame Tessa's constituency and represents neighbouring seat Camberwell and Peckham, celebrated Dame Tessa's politics of "smiling not shouting".

Sir Roger Gale, MP for North Thanet, said Dame Tessa "epitomised the capacity to put party-politics to one side" and spoke of her many friends from across the political spectrum.

Keith Chegwin, Emma Chambers, Seah Hughes and Petter Sallis were some of the other names remembered during the segment, who have all been lost within the past year.

Four-time Olympic gold medal-winning rower Matthew Pinsent said: "RIP Tessa Jowell - absolutely central to the effort to win and stage the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012". After stepping down from the Commons at the 2015 general election, she was made Baroness Jowell of Brixton.

Politicians across all parties have been paying tributes to the beloved former Labour MP all day as the announcement was made.
