Arizona educators could walk out of classes for sixth day on Thursday

In a video on the Arizona Educators United Facebook page, another set of organizers rallied teachers to head to the Capitol until the budget was passed.

Arizona teacher Aurelia Ionescu, front right, chants with other teachers as protest organizers announce their intention to go back to work as the state-wide teachers strike enters a fourth day at the Arizona Capitol, Tuesday, May 1, 2018, in Phoenix. We speak to Noah Karvelis, an elementary and middle school music teacher in Phoenix and one of the leaders of #RedForEd and Arizona Educators United.

The Legislature has slashed about $371 million in annual payments for other school district costs since 2009, including cutting $117 million in Ducey's first year in office in 2015.

The Arizona Senate has passed a $10.4 billion state budget plan that provides more than $300 million in raises for numerous state's striking teachers after working all night.

Major Arizona school districts in metro Phoenix and Tucson were still closed for the day on Thursday following Gov. Ducey's signing of budget legislation providing more than $300 million in raises for numerous state's striking teachers.

Students at many public schools in Arizona will miss a fifth day of classes Wednesday as a statewide teacher walkout continues.

The Senate passed the pay raises just before dawn, and Republican Gov. Doug Ducey immediately signed off on the plan to give teachers a 9 percent raise in the fall and 5 percent in each of the next two years. "They've got to get closure on this".

Some Arizona school districts will stay closed during a statewide walkout by teachers.

Townsend, a critic of the #RedForEd effort, later updated her post, saying she didn't mean to imply that lawmakers will be at the Capitol until Saturday. But the Republican-controlled House and Senate hadn't started its budget debate, although leaders still hoped to act on the $10.4 billion budget package late Wednesday. And a top Republican lawmaker gave teachers credit for keeping the pressure on.

"I'm missing my kids", she said, "but I think this is very important". "Our track record of delivering that promise has not always been ideal, so I don't think they wasted their time". From its beginnings in West Virginia, it spread to Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arizona and most recently Colorado. Hundreds of teachers and school staff gathered in support of the walkout, which began last week.

Teachers in the #RedforEd movement said they'll return to class on Thursday after the state Legislature is expected to pass a budget on Wednesday. "But it is time for us to get back to our students and get back into our classrooms".

"We have so many people now that are paying attention to what's going on, they will never turn away from this fight now", he said. In fact, legislative budget staffers acknowledged Tuesday that, even with all the money the governor says the plan will put into K-12 education, per-student funding on an inflation-adjusted basis will still be less by 2021 than it was in 2008.

Educators had to change their tactics after budget approval appeared imminent, association president Joe Thomas said.

The most obvious is an extra $2 million for "Freedom Schools" at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona that are backed by the billionaire Koch brothers, who support Ducey and are trying to add conservative political and economic schools at universities nationwide.
