United States vows to act within 48 hours over suspected Syrian chemical attack

United States vows to act within 48 hours over suspected Syrian chemical attack

Trump said the administration is talking to military leaders about an appropriate response.

According to CBN News National Security Correspondent Erik Rosales, just hours before the United Nations meeting, Secretary of Defense James Mattis released a statement saying the U.S.is not ruling anything out.

US officials are assessing whether Syrian President Bashar Assad's government was behind Saturday's suspected chemical weapons attack on rebel-held Douma, east of Damascus.

"We can not allow atrocities like that", he said.

The White House says President Donald Trump is focused on responding to the apparent use of chemical weapons in Syria.

This time a year ago, Trump found himself in a similar position when he authorized a missile strike on the Shayrat Airbase in response to a chemical weapons attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun. "The great evil of chemical weapons use that once unified the world in opposition is on the verge of becoming the new normal". More than 1,000 Iranians have been killed in Syria, including senior members of the Guards.

Trump said Monday, "We are getting some very good clarity", regarding who was responsible, a task that has been hard throughout the Syrian war and the source of conflict among the many global players involved.

At least 42 people were killed in a chemical attack in Syria on Saturday.

Mr Trump had warned of a "big price to pay" following the reports of a poison gas attack on the Syrian town of Douma which killed dozens of people, including children.

The situation is being discussed on Monday by the UN Security Council - a group of countries that work together to try to bring peace - and the European Union has called for an "immediate response by the global community".

"Israel strongly condemns the chemical weapons strike carried out by Syria on April 7, one year after the mass murder carried out by the regime in Khan Sheikun", a foreign ministry statement said.

U.S. officials told Reuters that Washington was weighing a multinational military response. "If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out and we'll know the answers quite soon". Assad has in recent months brought swathes of territory back under his control thanks to heavy Russian involvement, as well as support from other forces such as the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

"Russia is backing the Syrian regime, and the Syrian regime has been found to have a history of using chemical weapons against its own people", she said.

Leaders in France and the United Kingdom have largely adopted the same stance as the US, Nebenzya said.

After capturing most of Ghouta, Syria and Russian Federation secured two negotiated withdrawals last month that saw 46,000 rebels and civilians evacuate.

The US, France and United Kingdom have led global condemnation of the alleged attack, with the Syrian government and its Russian backers denying any responsibility. We can not continue to stand by and passively watch the slaughter of innocents, especially when we bear no small responsibility for this brutal civil war. We should work with the French.

Damascus has denied the allegations, and Russian Federation has said there is no evidence of a chemical attack.

An American official said the US was discussing with allies whether they would participate in a retaliatory strike.

Trump on Tuesday cancelled plans to travel to South America later this week, choosing to stay in the United States to manage the response to the events in Syria.
