United Nations source: OPCW experts unlikely to enter Syria's Douma on Wednesday

United Nations source: OPCW experts unlikely to enter Syria's Douma on Wednesday

The three Western powers fired around 100 missiles at three suspected chemical facilities in Syria on Saturday, saying they had proof that the government of President Bashar al-Assad was behind the Douma attack.

The U.S. said it was considering imposing new sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision would be taken in the near future.

United States officials have raised concerns that Russian Federation may have tampered with the site while inspectors were denied access. A Pentagon spokeswoman said there was no USA military activity in the area.

Haley said during an appearance on "Face the Nation" on Sunday that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would be announcing new sanctions directed at companies associated with Syria's chemical weapons program.

The UK envoy to the OPCW, Peter Wilson, on Monday accused Syria and Russian Federation of blocking the team's access to the site, which Russian Federation denied.

The alleged gas attack, which Syrian activists say killed more than 40 people, prompted punitive US, British and French airstrikes. They say the arrival of the inspectors is being held up by Syrian authorities who now control the area, and that evidence of the chemical attack may be being destroyed.

"Not even a day passed after the missile strikes when their organizers started putting forward odd and political initiatives", Nebenzia said.

Mr Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's radiological, biological and chemical protection unit, told reporters the roads still had to be de-mined and cleared and would be tested by United Nations security services on Tuesday.

Nauert added that she was aware of reports from Syria that inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had been able to see the site but "our understanding is that the team has not entered Douma".

USA says it caught Syrian-German linked to 9/11
Syria and its Russian backers deny that government forces were responsible for the reported attack in the town of Douma. Residents say they worry that Syrian authorities and their Russian allies are whitewashing the history of April 7.

"We will not indulge the authors of these fake reports", Zakharova added, explaining that the Russian side "does its part of the work in a very responsible, professional and reliable manner".

Hours earlier, Syrian government-run media said the country's air defenses confronted a new "aggression", shooting down missiles over the central region of Homs and a suburb of Damascus.

Earlier this month, four Iranian military personnel were killed in an airstrike on Syria's T4 air base, also in Homs.

Syria denies any chemical attack took place stating it was "staged". Israel did not confirm or deny mounting the raid.

As CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports, rebel forces had held Douma nearly since the start of the war in Syria, now more than seven years old, and the government's fight to take it back was fierce.

The lab contained chlorine and various ingredients for mustard gas, Russian chemical weapons specialist Alexander Rodionov said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

The Kremlin also denied that Russian Federation was not allowing the OPCW mission in.

It included a visit to the main hospital to which the victims of the alleged chemical attack where taken.
