Trump Promises to Lay Off States with Legal Marijuana

Trump Promises to Lay Off States with Legal Marijuana

"Late Wednesday, I received a commitment from the President that the Department of Justice's rescission of the Cole memo will not impact Colorado's legal marijuana industry", Gardner said in the statement.

While many states have decriminalized or legalized marijuana use, the drug is still illegal under federal law, which created a conflict between federal and state law.

While more than half of the USA states have approved marijuana for medical or recreational use, it is still illegal under federal law.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr. Gardner's statement is "accurate".

In February, Gardner lifted most of the holds he put on the Justice nominees the month before.

President Trump was reportedly so enraged by an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid of his personal attorney's office and hotel that he is now on the brink of firing Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general he appointed, as well as Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Gardner, who heads the campaign operation charged with hanging on to the Republicans' Senate majority, was irate in January when Sessions revoked guidance from the Obama administration, known as the Cole memo, that had discouraged prosecutors from enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that had legalized the drug. Gardner said Trump told him the marijuana industry in Colorado won't be targeted, the Post wrote.

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana", Gardner said in a statement on Friday.

"We're always consulting Congress about issues, including states' rights, of which the president is a firm believer". Attorney General Jeff Sessions instead directed USA attorneys to use prosecutorial discretion.

Following Wednesday night's phone call with the President, the Senator is now backing down from his blockade. "So we're reluctant to reward that sort of behavior".

Since then, he has held up about 20 Justice Department nominations. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The people of MA have voted to make marijuana legal under state law and the Cannabis Control Commission has been given the authority to establish a strong regulatory system that ensures public safety and allows for responsible sale and use of marijuana products", she said in a statement.

This move comes days after former Republican House Speaker John Boehner announced he would join the advisory board of a medical marijuana holding company.
