Southwest Airlines mechanics very anxious about safety in weeks before Flight 1380

Southwest Airlines mechanics very anxious about safety in weeks before Flight 1380

Jennifer Riordan, 43 and a mother of two, was sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board said an engine fan blade on Flight 1380 suffered metal fatigue before breaking.

"CFM recommends ultrasonic inspections within the next 20 days to fan blades of CFM56-7B engines with more than 30,000 cycles since new", the service bullet issued Friday said.

Engine maker CFM, a joint venture between General Electric and Safran, issued a service bulletin recommending stepped-up checks because the fan blades on the engine that failed on Tuesday would not have been covered for immediate inspections under the previous standards.

The letter was sent less than two months before the April 17 incident on Southwest Flight 1380 in which an engine on a Southwest Boeing 737-700 aircraft exploded in mid-flight en route from New York City to Dallas. The emergency order is effective immediately and inspections must be completed within 20 days.

Shrapnel from the engine smashed the window, which caused rapid decompression in the cabin.

A similar accident on a Southwest flight in August 2016 forced a plane, equipped with the same engine, to make an emergency landing. The plane made an emergency landing and no one was injured.

The manufacturer told CNN it has been working with the FAA on the inspection procedures.

The FAA last August notified carriers it was prepared to require inspections based on CFM's service bulletins, but had not finalised those inspections.

Engines in 681 aircraft will be checked worldwide.

More than 150 have already been inspected.

Inspections can be conducted without having to dismantle an engine and it takes about four hours per engine.

This April 17, 2018 photo provided by Marty Martinez shows the window that was shattered after a jet engine of a Southwest Airlines airplane blew out at altitude, resulting in the death of a woman who was almost sucked from the window during the flight of the Boeing 737 bound from NY to Dallas with 149 people aboard, after it made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.
