Saudi air defence forces intercept missile over Najran - statement

The attack on Wednesday marked the fourth time in five months that missiles have flown over Riyadh, as the Houthis step up efforts to demonstrate they can reach the Saudi capital, and threatens to escalate a regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Air Forces announced Wednesday the interception of two missiles fired from Yemen, including one towards Riyadh, Al Arabiya local news reported.

The Yemeni rocketry forces managed on Tuesday to launch a ballistic missile (Badr1) onto a Saudi military camp in Jizan. In a statement, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said it downed a drone targeting an airport in the southwestern province of Abha and another in Jazan.

While Saudi Arabia and its allies have been able to recover areas in southern Yemen from the Houthis, the rebels still control the capital Sana'a and territories in the north.

"The missile force carried out a large-scale ballistic missile attack on various parts of Saudi Arabia", the group's Al-Masirah TV said.

The group unveiled the Qasef-1 drone a year ago.

Riyadh has been the target of frequent missile attacks since March 2015, when Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries launched a military campaign in Yemen against the Houthis, a group of Iran-backed Shi'ite fighters who had seized the capital.

Primarily based on a United Nations report, larger than 9,245 people have been killed in Yemen since March 2015, larger than half of which had been civilians.
