Putin, Erdogan launch construction of Turkey´s first nuclear power plant

Turkey and Russia have chose to shorten the duration of the S-400 air defense missile systems' delivery, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on April 3, speaking in the presidential complex in Ankara in a joint press conference held with his Turkish counterpart.

Putin asserted that Russian partners would encourage Turkey's small- and medium-scale companies to participate in this project.

Turkey and Russian Federation have put aside their traditional rivalries and differences on regional issues to forge closer ties.

"We are also in close cooperation with Russian Federation to end as soon as possible the terror threat and clashes in Syria", Erdogan said.

Last week, Turkey announced it would not be following North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Union allies in ousting Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning in Britain of a former Russian spy.

Yuri Ushakov, Russia's presidential aide, told national media on Monday that Moscow will exert every effort for completing the delivery of air defence systems S-400 to Turkey by 2020.

The Akkuyu power station - a project costing over $20 billion (16 billion euros) and heavily disliked by environmentalists - was already launched once before in February 2015 but then put on hold due to the row over the downed Russian plane.

Erdogan said: 'The power plant will contribute to our energy security and also play an important role in the fight against climate change'.

The three leaders will discuss regional events, the ongoing war in Syria, and the relations between their countries.

Russian Federation and Turkey — along with Iran — are also working together to create "de-escalation zones" to reduce the fighting in Syria and bring the sides of the conflict together to negotiate Syria's future.

"In the name of God!"

"We face the ambitious goal of launching the first reactor in 2023 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey", Mr Putin said during Tuesday's ceremony.

"When all units are in operation, the nuclear plant will supply 10 percent of Turkey's electricity demand", Putin noted.

Russian Federation and Turkey are also building the TurkStream gas pipeline under the Black Sea that will allow Moscow to pump gas to Europe avoiding Ukraine and increase Turkey's importance as a transit hub.

"If you can deal with them, deal with them, or we will come to Sinjar and we will do it", he added.
