Prince Philip to have hip surgery today ahead of royal wedding

He was admitted on Tuesday to the King Edward VII Hospital in London which is regularly used by the royals.

The husband of the Queen had an operation on his hip.

The husband of Queen Elizabeth II Duke of Edinburgh admitted to the London hospital king Edward VII.

The late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.

Philip withdrew in March from a planned appearance with his son, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, at Windsor Castle to mark Andrew's role as colonel of the Grenadier Guards, which he is taking over from Philip.

Greek-born Philip did not accompany the Queen to church at St George's Chapel on Easter Sunday because of the hip problem.

He was forced to miss the Easter religious services last week, however, due to the problem with his hip.

But he has generally been of good health throughout his life and has kept active well into his later years and is thought to be keeping busy now he has effectively retired from royal duties.

Philip has suffered from heart disease and other ailments in recent years.

The palace says Philip is "progressing satisfactorily at this early stage" and is likely to spend several days in the hospital.

He has carried out about 22,000 solo royal engagements since Elizabeth became Queen in 1952. "That's more important than someone's chronological age".
