New England Patriots Deal Brandin Cooks To The Los Angeles Rams

New England Patriots Deal Brandin Cooks To The Los Angeles Rams

When news broke of the New England Patriots dealing Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams, the entire National Football League began to wonder what's next for Bill Belichick and a team coming off a Super Bowl loss.

The Patriots have traded Cooks to the Rams for Los Angeles' first-round draft pick, 23rd overall. Cooks is the fourth former first-round pick the Rams have added to their roster this offseason, but only the first on the offensive side.

Some think the Patriots could package those picks to move up in the draft and select one of the top quarterbacks as a future replacement for Tom Brady.

Belichick's recent trade for Cordarelle Patterson provided another burner who, although far inferior to Cooks as a receiver, can juice up gadget plays and run clear-outs in addition to enhancing the return game.

So, why did the Patriots trade Cooks? The talent man of the Los Angeles Ram is unafraid to make a deal and cooked one up this week with Belichick. The juiciest - but most unlikely - is the Patriots trading those two first-rounders for Odell Beckham Jr., meeting the ransom the Giants reportedly want for the mercurial receiver.

The draft picks include the number 43 overall pick, which the Patriots received from the San Francisco 49ers in the trade that took Jimmy Garoppolo to California. New England also dealt its 2018 fourth-round choice to the Rams.

Either way, the Patriots made a shrewd move dealing Cooks.

Brandin Cooks spent all of one season in New England before the Patriots chose to move on from the speedy wide receiver.

China launches crude oil futures
By 11:14 a.m. (0314 GMT), 3,599 lots of the most-active June contract had traded, equivalent to 3.6 million barrels of crude. China's yuan-denominated crude oil futures have launched in Shanghai , and were up sharply in the first day of trading.

The 24-year-old Cooks had 65 catches for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns in his only season with the Patriots.

He could hold out rather than report for the start of the offseason program on his one-year contract worth $8.5 million, but coach Pat Shurmur expects Beckham to show up next week.

A more realistic scenario would be for the Giants to ask for one of the first-round picks, No. 1 or No. 4, one of their first two second-round picks, a high-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and, perhaps, receiver Corey Coleman. If the team could move up to the early to mid first round, they could be looking at guys like Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, or Mason Rudolph.

New England trading Brandin Cooks to LA means that the Patriots will not be trading Rob Gronkowski this off-season, as some have speculated.

The more likely possibility that has been floated is the Patriots using some combination of those four picks, which are Nos.

As long as the Patriots have Gronkowski, Edelman, Chris Hogan, and James White healthy, Brady and the offense will probably be just fine.

Now, the Patriots will likely look to replace Cooks either with a rookie in the draft or a veteran in free agency.
