Kentucky Governor Apologizes for Blaming Teacher Protests for Sexual Assault of Children

Kentucky Governor Apologizes for Blaming Teacher Protests for Sexual Assault of Children

After the bills were overridden, a few reporters caught up to Bevin outside the Capitol, and he told them that kids had been sexually abused or harmed because schools had been closed for the teacher protests.

"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them", Bevin said Friday.

Bevin said on Friday that single-parent households in the state had been forced to leave children at home and in peril of not just sexual assault, but of ingesting poison or being offered drugs for the first time.

"I'm offended by the idea that people so cavalierly, and so flippantly, disregarded what's truly best for children", Bevin said. More than 30 school districts said they were forced to close because they didn't have enough teachers. Kentucky is one of several states, including West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona, to be roiled by teacher protests in recent weeks.

In a almost four-minute-long video posted to his Twitter account, Bevin talks about "unintended consequences" and "misunderstandings".

The governor's outburst came of the heels of the majority Republican lawmakers overriding his vetoes of the budget and revenue bills.

Amid backlash from state lawmakers and teacher groups, Bevin said his comments were misunderstood by some but were damaging to others.

House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins said Sunday that Bevin still doesn't get it. "I know a tremendous amount of people didn't fully appreciate what I was communicating".

"I don't agree with these comments & I find them repulsive".

"Gov. Bevin did offer what he called an apology, which is to essentially say, 'I am sorry you misunderstood me, '" said Charles Booker, a candidate for the Kentucky House of Representatives. However, officials from both Erlanger-Elsemere and Bellevue said Bevin's proposed education cuts - not the one-day absence of teachers - would "severely reduce" services that provide forms of childcare before and after school, including kindergarten, preschool and tutoring.

Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Secretary Hal Heiner announced his resignation as Secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet today to accept an appointment as a member of the Kentucky Board of Education. "I can't defend it", she said. He noted the pension changes they passed do not affect current or retired teachers, and once people realize that "I think a lot of this will go by the wayside".

"There is no rational comment I could make to that."

Three years ago, Robin Cooper voted for Bevin.
