Japanese women ordered from sumo ring during first aid

Japanese women ordered from sumo ring during first aid

The head of Japan's sumo federation, Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, apologized later for the incident, which he called "an inappropriate response in a life-threatening situation".

The women - one of whom is a physician - were trying to give medical care to the mayor of Maizuru, Ryozo Tatami, who was giving a speech in the ring when he was taken ill.

Two Japanese women were shamed for entering a "sacred" sumo ring to provide first aid to a local mayor who collapsed during a speech, reigniting criticism about the tradition as discriminatory, it was reported Thursday.

"The referee was upset and made the announcement, but it was an inappropriate response because the situation could have been life-threatening", Hakkaku said in the statement.

In a statement, Hakkaku said the announcement was made by an official who panicked after seeing the women in the ring, but did not mention the age-old tradition.

Trump concedes likely delay on infrastructure
Trump unveiled the sweeping infrastructure proposal in February and cast it as one that could garner bipartisan support. In fact, it was Hillary Clinton who won over Trump by eight points.

This is not the first time there has been a sumo battle of the sexes. Several women stepped up into the ring and performed first aid including cardiac massage until an ambulance crew arrived.

In February, a sumo wrestler was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, and last month, Egyptian sumo wrestler Osunaarashi was arrested for allegedly driving without a licence when he got into a auto accident in central Japan.

Sumo is linked to Shinto ceremonies and matches are often considered offerings to gods. She too found herself banned from the ring.

The tradition drew public attention for the first time in 1978, when a 10-year-old girl advanced to the final round of a children's sumo championship.

Footage of the incident, which was broadcast widely in Japan, showed a number of women hesitating on the fringes of the ring as the announcement was repeated before staying to assist. Makiko Uchidate, a writer and former member of the sumo association's yokozuna council, argues that gender separation is a long-held custom and that the issue should be viewed separately from other gender discrimination.
