Israel fires at suspects who briefly breached Gaza border

Fifty-one Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank and Gaza so far this year, including Iyad Zabarka, a 30-year-old Palestinian citizen of Israel who was shot dead by soldiers in the West Bank while fleeing the scene after he reportedly crashed a stolen auto during a chase with a private security company on Tuesday.

Palestinian news agency Maan said that an Israeli tank fired twice towards the Strip, however the Israeli military said it only used small arms fire.

The report further referred to concerns by the Israeli army sources that in case of many Palestinian casualties, the global community might renew diplomatic pressure on the regime.

Drawing global criticism for its use of live fire, Israel said it is doing what is necessary to stop violent protesters from damaging or breaching its fence with the blockaded enclave.

The Israeli military has said it fired only at "instigators" involved in attacks on soldiers and was investigating Murtaja's death amid a very hectic environment.

A Palestinian farmer was also killed last week the before dawn on Friday, March 30th, the first day of the massive demonstration.

Rather than acknowledge, much less deal with, the grounds on which Israel faces widespread and justified criticism - including the illegal settlements on Palestinian land, the military occupation of the West Bank, and now the shooting of unarmed civilians in Gaza - Mr Regev, by denouncing what he calls "the obsessional and irrational hatred of the Jewish state", seeks to characterise Israel's critics - who include many Jews - as antisemites.

About 20,000 Palestinians participated in protests dubbed the "Friday of Tires" along the Israel-Gaza border.

Also in Australia, almost 1,000 demonstrators joined a protest rally in Melbourn dubbed "Free Palestine" to censure Israeli regime's brutal violence - including live fire - used against Palestinian protesters in occupied territories in recent days. The injured Palestinian was taken to hospital in severe condition.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated its "grave concern" for further violence ahead of Friday's demonstrations.

At least 31 Palestinians have died in connection with violence at the border since last week, when Gazans launched six weeks of protests against the displacement of some 700,000 Arabs from their homes when Israel was founded in 1948. No Israelis were injured.

Tension has grown across the Palestinian territories since December 6 when U.S. President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mourners and journalists carry the body of Palestinian journalist Yasser Murtaja, during his funeral in Gaza City on April 7, 2018.
