Here's what Mark Zuckerberg will tell Congress Tuesday about Facebook's data mess

Here's what Mark Zuckerberg will tell Congress Tuesday about Facebook's data mess

Researchers say it's unlikely that Facebook will upset its business model, which allows advertisers to precisely target users, even as the company clamps down on the information it passes to app developers.

Facebook said most of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the United States - though there are more than a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the UK.

When Mark Zuckerberg appears Tuesday afternoon before members of two Senate committees, it will be the culmination of a Facebook public relations blitz in the face of a series of controversies that have tarnished the reputation of the world's largest social network.

Around 87 million Facebook users around the world, including 300,000 in Australia, will from today find out if their private data was shared without their permission.

This week the Facebook CEO is in talks with several lawmakers before he sits in front of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the Judiciary Committee tomorrow and then the House Energy and Commerce committee the say after.

Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to testify to Congress this week to answer questions surrounding the scandal and how the company handles privacy and user data.

He's expected to concede that Facebook "didn't do enough" to prevent a host of problems on its platform, such as fake news, foreign interference in elections, hate speech and data privacy.

"It's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well", Zuckerberg plans to tell lawmakers. Zuckerberg said in written testimony released by the US House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Zuckerberg said Facebook came up with the 87 million figure by calculating the maximum number of friends that users could have had while Kogan's app was collecting data. Facebook is a data collection company.

By flooding the zone with product fixes and executive interviews, Facebook has effectively armed Zuckerberg with more convincing talking points to use when he gets grilled by Congress.

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg said as many as 146 million people may have received information from a Russian agency that's accused of orchestrating much of the cyber-meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Zuckerberg has been summoned because of the unauthorized use of data harvested by British data firm Cambridge Analytica.

Mr. Zuckerberg's public remarks will be closely watched by investors. GBH said it had conducted surveys that estimated almost 15 per cent of Facebook users had curtailed their activity on the platform in recent weeks because of the data privacy concerns. Again, he'll explain what happened during the USA 2016 presidential election and how a Russia-led disinformation campaign used Facebook to sway opinions on a number of issues.

Facebook has rolled out a series of changes on its platform in recent weeks aimed at bolstering data privacy and advertising transparency.

On Monday night, CNN reported that the biggest Black Lives Matter page on Facebook is fake, once again raising questions about the integrity of Facebook's platform.

"Facebook will not have any right to review or approve their research findings prior to publication", the company said in a blog post. Facebook shares closed up 0.5 percent on Monday.

To make matters worse, there has been a steady drip of damaging revelations about the company in the days leading up to Zuckerberg's testimony.
