Durant to decline option, re-sign with Warriors

Durant to decline option, re-sign with Warriors

The Golden State Warriors superstar plans to opt out of his contract this summer before restructure his deal in order to remain with the team, ESPN's Chris Haynes reported Wednesday, citing National Basketball Association sources.

Durant was set to make $26.2 million next year, but by opting out he'll be able to sign a larger contract with Golden State.

Paul George #13 of the Oklahoma City Thunder applies pressure as Kevin Durant #35 of the Golden State Warriors looks for a shot during the first half of a National Basketball Association game at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on April 3, 2018 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Last summer, Kevin Durant accepted a deal well below his market value. That said, Durant has no intentions of leaving the Bay Area.

The Warriors and Spurs met last May in the Western Conference Finals, with the Warriors sweeping the series in four games.

Golden State were heavy favorites to win the 2018 title after their five-game Finals drubbing of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He did so to allow the Warriors to retain the likes of forward Andre Iguodala and backup point guard Shaun Livingston while allowing the franchise to add free agents to the roster.

"Financially, obviously, what I wanted to do a year ago, it made sense", Durant told the Athletic in March.

The Warriors and Durant agreed last summer to a two-year, $51-million deal with the player owning the opt-out option. Last offseason, Durant took nearly $10 million less than what he could have earned on a max salary which allowed Golden State to resign role players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston. If he wants to leave his options open, giving himself the opportunity to become a free agent again in the near future, he may opt for a two- or three-year deal.

"I just feel like there was so much movement in our lineups", said the former MVP, according to Anthony Slater of The Athetic. "That's a bridge too far for me, but anyway..." He ends the campaign with an average of 26.4 points, 5.4 assists and 6.8 rebounds per game. Durant is playing perhaps the best defense of his career.
