Bollywood star Salman Khan convicted in poaching case

Bollywood star Salman Khan convicted in poaching case

The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.

Salman Khan, a 52-year-old baby-faced leading man was accused by members of the Bishnoi religious sect in western India of shooting at a group of rare black-and-white antelope on a hunting trip while filming a movie in 1998.

However, today's a day of justice because Salman Khan has finally been convicted to 5 years of jail for Blackbuck poaching.

Another trade analyst Girish Wankhede said it is a big blow to the industry as Salman Khan's films has been a money spinner with back-to-back blockbusters to his credit.

He pleaded "not guilty" to the charge, and insisted the evidence presented against him was "false", according to The Hindu news website. Khan's lawyers said he was carrying an air gun, which can not be used for hunting an antelope. In 2015 he was found guilty in a deadly hit and run accident and received a five-year prison sentence.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan's punishment for the 1998 blackbuck and chinkara poaching case has come as shocker to most.

Preparations for sending Salman to the Jodhpur Central jail are in place, Mahipal Bishnoi, the prosecution counsel, told reporters. A higher court is challenging his acquittal. Fellow Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, at number 8 on the list, is the only Indian actor to have earned more than him a year ago.

In a decision issued on Thursday, a court in the northwestern city of Jodhpur said Khan is liable for violating the country's wildlife law for the October 1998 incident. The community has pursued the case against Khan for nearly two decades and cheered the decision by setting off firecrackers near the courthouse and handing out candies.

Salman was charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and others under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code. He launched a charity called Being Human - The Salman Khan Foundation that took on various health and education initiatives and was seen participating in various philanthropic activities. At the time of announcing the order, Salman would have to be in a court.
