BMW M2 Competition Is Official With 405 Horsepower

As good as the BMW M2 is, there are a few hardcore M enthusiasts who won't consider it a proper M vehicle. Despite the added bulk, its power-to-weight ratio has risen by 17bhp per tonne over its predecessor to 261bhp per tonne.

With the M Driver's package, the top speed increases to 174 miles per hour, 6 MPH faster than the 2018 model.

By comparison, the older M2 has a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.5sec for the manual and 4.3sec for the dual-clutch version. Then there are the black tailpipes poking out the back, double-arm door mirrors and a new front skirt with a modified air intake, which BMW says is there to improve both the look and cooling potential. The software for the electric power steering and the Active M Differential have also been adjusted.

BMW has outfitted the coupe with a new performance exhaust system as well, which features electronically-controlled flaps for those who prefer the soundtrack of the twin-turbo inline-six when driving.

Harnessing the extra power is a new carbon fibre under-bonnet brace from the M3 and M4, which works with the M4's bulkhead strut to significantly increase rigidity at the front of the auto, improving steering behaviour and precision. "We've improved it a lot". The brakes are larger on all four corners and feature six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

The stability control has been retuned to come on later and allow more drift in corners while still enhancing traction and control.

BMW M division's head of development, Dirk Häcker, said the chassis revisions provide the new M2 with "significantly improved response and more progressive on-the-limit characteristics" than its predecessor. The new M2 Competition stands out with tons of visual changes to its exteriors, while the tuned up engine punches out power like never before. These include larger air intakes and a gloss black "kidney grille" at the front, along with new wing mirrors and black inserts on the side of the auto.

Inside, the M2 Competition is differentiated from the outgoing model by a number of subtle changes.

The cooling system comes from the M4 with the Competition package, though BMW has tweaked it for the M2 Competition. It's priced at £49,285 and will be available to order from May, with deliveries beginning in August.

The interior of the M2 Competition is distinguished by a pair of aggressively bolstered sport bucket front seats; several M2 logos including an illuminated version in upper part of the driver's seat, and a pair of selector switches that allow the driver to alter throttle profile, steering mode, and the stability control.
