Turkish troops can enter Syria's Afrin "at any moment": Erdogan

Turkish troops can enter Syria's Afrin

The move came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened again to "purge" Kurdish militia from the town.

Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch in January, its second military intervention in Syria since 2011, after Washington said it would set up a border force comprising 30,000 Kurdish militants near Turkish soil.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the attacking forces "are now 4km away from the town of Afrin from the northeast, where there are intense clashes, air strikes, and artillery fire". He also vowed to sweep Kurdish fighters from the length of the border.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Austrian counterpart Karin Kneissl, Cavusoglu told reporters in Vienna that Turkey wanted the operation to end as quickly as possible so that Afrin can "embrace stability and civilians can return".

The International Committee of the Red Cross said a convoy of 13 trucks with supplies, including food parcels for 12,000 people, went into Douma - the largest and most populated town in the rebel-held eastern Ghouta, on the edge of the Syrian capital - earlier in the day.

"Once we have purged the terrorists (from Afrin) we will then cleanse them from Manbij, Ayn al-Arab (Kobane), Tel-Abyad, Ras al-Ayn and Qamishli", he said in televised comments. "We will defend Afrin and all the areas of Rojava from Turkey's advances".

Fighting was raging on Saturday on other fronts around Afrin in an attempt to besiege it and cut it off from other areas, the Observatory.

But, according to him, the advance sparked "major concerns" for tens of thousands of civilians in the town of Afrin.

Only one route now leads out of the town and into regime-controlled zones in Syria's northern province of Aleppo.

A media outlet reported on Friday that the army troops and Free Syrian Army (FSA) captured another village in Syria's Northwestern Afrin and took control of a strategic dam.

The monitor says at least 370 YPG fighters and 340 rebel fighters have died since the assault began.

The military also said only terror targets were being destroyed and "utmost care" was being taken to not harm civilians.

The Syrian government has already condemned the "brutal Turkish aggression" against Afrin, rejecting Ankara's claim about having informed Damascus of the operation.
