Trump 'On the Same Wavelength' as Mike Pompeo on North Korea

Trump 'On the Same Wavelength' as Mike Pompeo on North Korea

Republicans in Congress were quick to express support for Trump's replacement pick, Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo.

The president regularly criticises the agreement as a bad deal and has repeatedly threatened to end it.

Tillerson had visited Nigeria on the last leg of his official visits to Africa, and met President Muhammadu Buhari, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest to both countries. Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!

A senior White House official said the president wanted to reshuffle his team with a view to launching talks with North Korea, following last week's spectacular announcement of a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

Certainly not the foreign diplomats he dealt with either: Tillerson didn't have the background in diplomacy or politics to be impressive. And I've also spoken to White House Chief of Staff Kelly, to ensure we have clarity as to the days ahead.

Pompeo, for instance, has tended to play down the intelligence community's findings of Russian meddling in the 2016 US election and to stress Iran's missile development and role in Middle East conflicts instead of its adherence to the 2015 nuclear deal, some officials have said. But over time, Tillerson found himself frozen out and in disagreement with the man who mattered most, Trump. He declared Tuesday, "I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want".

Trump called for Pompeo to be swiftly confirmed in the role - as his administration heads into the high-stakes talks.

Trump touts paper ballots as bulwark against Russian election meddling
One of the things we're learning, it's always good to have a paper back-up system of voting. You don't want your system of votes to be compromised in any way.

In a January 13 cable, the State Department sketched out a path under which the three European allies would simply commit to try to improve the deal over time in return for Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing sanctions relief in May.

Trump announced the changes in a morning Twitter post and later told reporters more about why he removed Tillerson.

But with Pompeo tapped to become secretary of state, some USA officials and analysts worry about what they see as the Republican former congressman's habit of telling Trump what he wants to hear, especially as the administration prepares for an unprecedented summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Before that, Tillerson's State Department was preparing new sanctions with the Treasury Department to target some of the entities and individuals charged last month by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for meddling online against the 2016 election.

Tillerson's position: Tillerson has taken a harder line on Russian Federation than Trump.

"He will have an appreciation of Canada on the security side, and we will now do our efforts to remind him on the economic side", Robertson said during an interview with CBC News.

FILE - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrives at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport in Djibouti, March 9, 2018. "We do see it and you need to stop", Tillerson said in the Fox interview.

"Pompeo may be more effective at running State than his predecessor, but he is not prepared to manage the regional or global policy coordination needed to help the summit with Kim succeed", he said.
