Trump names ex-ambassador John Bolton as new National Security Adviser

The move, which was sudden but not unexpected, signals a more confrontational approach in foreign policy at a time when Trump faces challenges, including from Iran and North Korea. "If the administration wants to show that it is interested in a good faith effort toward diplomacy, bringing John Bolton into the policymaking arena is not the way to do so".

Yet historically, even those who espoused the most extreme positions as private citizens have a way of moderating when faced with the awesome task of running the nation.

"The Bolton PAC was obsessed with how America was becoming limp wristed and spineless and it wanted research and messaging for national security issues", said Wylie, a data expert who was a key figure in the founding of Cambridge Analytica.

Richard Painter, a former White House lawyer under President George Bush, described Bolton as "by far the most unsafe man" of that administration.

"I think the question that a lot of people have is why it has taken so long to get confirmed assistant secretaries of State".

But if he and Trump bond, Bolton's America First philosophy could give shape and consistency to Trump's most reckless instincts. However, the installation of Bolton in place of H.R. McMaster and the hawkish Mike Pompeo as USA secretary of state in place of Rex Tillerson two weeks ago demonstrates that the objective of any meeting will not be to negotiate, but to deliver a U.S. ultimatum or stage a provocation.

"I am very thankful for the service of General H R McMaster who has done an outstanding job & will always remain my friend", Trump said.

Britain's top diplomat says Russia's Vladimir Putin ordered ex-spy's poisoning
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials have suggested that the nerve agent attack probably does not rise to that level. Mirzayanov revealed details of Russia's chemical weapons in the 1990s because he said he was afraid of their impact.

In another Wall Street Journal comment last August, Bolton scathingly dismissed any prospect of a deal with North Korea and declared that "some sort of strike is likely unavoidable unless China agrees to regime change in Pyongyang". Bolton has tweeted that withdrawal should be "a top @realDonaldTrump administration priority" and that USA policy instead should be "aimed at regime change in Tehran". All of the officials requested anonymity to discuss diplomatic conversations.

"Obviously there was some friction between the secretary of State and the president; some days that would be putting it mildly", Petraeus said.

And The Diplomat noted that the timing is odd, coming as it does two weeks after Trump accepted an invitation from Kim Jon-un for a historic US-North Korea summit. As recently as last month, he was arguing that the US had a legal basis to attack North Korea in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

"It is perfectly legitimate for the United States to respond to the current "necessity" posed by North Korea's nuclear weapons by striking first". He served in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and as a Bush lawyer during the 2000 Florida recount.

So, it's no surprise that Bolton disdains the Iran nuclear accord and opposes negotiations with North Korea. "We definitely told them about how we were doing it".

In contrast the Palestinians reacted angrily, with Hanan Ashrawi, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, slamming Trump's pick."This man has a long history of hostility to Palestinians, dating to when he was at the United Nations, where he was protecting Israeli immunity", Ashrawi told AFP, referring to USA vetoes of UN resolutions targeting Israel. He was equally disinclined to indulge the bureaucratic constraints of the State Department back in Washington.

Bolton served as US Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2005-2006 and as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security from 2001-2005.

But while Bolton's pugnaciousness might pair well with Trump's, his views could cause friction with the president's anti-interventionist bent.
