Saudi crown prince says will develop nuclear bomb if Iran does

"Saudi Arabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible", Mohammad bin Salman, popularly known as MBS, told USA broadcaster CBS in an interview set to air on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said his country would obtain a nuclear bomb if Iran develops an atomic weapon.

The comments come after a recent joint statement from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain condemning Iran' for supposedly continuing to develop nuclear ballistic missiles.

"We highly appreciate the co-operation that we have with Saudi Arabia to fight crime and terror".

The policy also requires best exploitation of local natural resources and full application of global standards in radiation waste management.

Prince Mohammed, who also serves as Saudi defense minister, said a year ago that the kingdom would make sure any future struggle between the two countries "is waged in Iran", prompting Iranian threats to hit back at most of Saudi Arabia except the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

O'DONNELL: Does Saudi Arabia need nuclear weapons to counter Iran?

In previous talks, Saudi Arabia has refused to sign up to any agreement that would deprive it of the possibility of one day enriching uranium.

The standard prohibits the recipient of the nuclear technology from enriching uranium and reprocessing plutonium, which could be used to produce fuel for nuclear weapons.

Riyadh severed relations with Iran in early 2016 after Iranian demonstrators ransacked two Saudi diplomatic missions in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad.

The new policy stated that "all nuclear activities will be restricted to peaceful purposes, within the framework defined by worldwide legislations, treaties and conventions", according to a statement released by the government on Wednesday.
