Feinstein Fails to Receive Party's Endorsement at California Democratic Party Convention

Dianne Feinstein, the California Democratic Party has declined to endorse the state's own senior senator in her bid for reelection.

The delegates voted for her primary rival, state Senate leader Kevin de Leon, 54 percent to 37 percent. "The outcome of today's endorsement vote is an astounding rejection of politics as usual", de Leon said, "and it boosts our campaign's momentum as we all stand shoulder-to-shoulder against a complacent status quo." de Leon didn't mention Feinstein once in his victory speech (it wasn't exactly a victory speech after all; a candidate needs 60 percent to win the party's nomination), but he didn't need too.

"De León's campaign is founded on winning support from progressives who believe Feinstein is not liberal enough to represent California, as well as Latino voters".

It's the first time Feinstein, 84, failed to win the party's backing since her first successful U.S. Senate campaign in 1994, though she's lacked a credible Democratic challenger in previous races.

Despite Saturday's setback, she is ahead of de Leon in the primary race by 29 percentage points, the latest polling of the race shows.

California Democrats held their convention in San Diego over the weekend. Numerous delegates are now part of the progressive wing of the party and Feinstein is considered moderate or centrist.

"California's greatness comes from acts of human audacity, not congressional seniority", de León said.

Feinstein supporters, meanwhile, said her long track record as a fighter for Democrats and women makes her the party's best choice. Many of them don't like her pragmatism on law and order issues or her unwillingness to fight President Donald Trump on everything he tweets and everything he proposes.

De Leon argues that Feinstein, who is considered to be the establishment pick, has grown out of touch with the more progressive California that has developed since she began her political career.
