Boko Haram frees abducted Dapchi schoolgirls

Boko Haram frees abducted Dapchi schoolgirls

The Federal Government has said that no ransom was paid to secure the release of 106 abducted persons, comprising 104 Dapchi schoolgirls, one other girl and a boy on Wednesday.

Nigerian Minister of Information Lai Mohammed confirmed that 101 of the 110 girls abducted are back home safe, and one boy was also returned.

Mohammed had earlier said their release was the result of "back-channel efforts" with the help of "some friends of the country", without elaborating.

The minister added that the number of the freed girls would be updated after the remaining ones have been documented, especially because the girls were not handed over to anyone but dropped off in Dapchi.

Her own daughter, Rifkatu, is still missing almost four years after she and over 200 of her classmates were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants from their school in Chibok about 275 km (170 miles) away.

Abdullahi said: "Immediately the insurgents dropped them from the truck that they were brought in around 8 a.m., the girls all ran home".

The extraordinary development brought elation to most of the families, but more heartache for the relatives of the six girls still unaccounted for.

'Tomb Raider' review: Lara Croft return feels like leftovers
The ensemble is pretty weak and all of the supporting characters have incredibly one-dimensional motivations that don't hold up. This is in no small part due to Vikander's charisma and charm, which carries the film through even its weakest points.

Boko Haram Kidnappings: Will Buhari bring back Dapchi Girls?

The terrorists rolled into the town of Dapchi on Wednesday, dropping some of the abductees they had spirited away from the Government Science and Technical College there, the Associated Press reported. "They said that if they knew they were Muslim girls, they wouldn't have abducted them".

Another parent told CNN his daughter Fatima, 14, was in such a poor state that she was unable to stand up when he saw her.

"For the abducted girls who have been returned, and their families, this is a day of huge relief", the statement quoted the organisation's Nigeria Director, Osai Ojigho, as remarking.

Of the original 300 kidnapped girls, about 200 were released after the government paid hefty ransoms. Those that died were not killed by Boko Haram, they died because they were trampled upon.

But it came with a warning.

The military rejected the allegation, calling it an "outright falsehood". That is what I feel because the Dapchi girls have been released.
