Android P Developer Preview is now available

Photos might be one of the most beloved Google apps and services and it's always unbelievable to see how smart it is at parsing people, pets, things, and locations.

In the beginning, Google Lens was made available only to Pixel users, but before Lens, Google Goggles was an early app version and it was first released a year ago for Pixel users exclusively too. Although it hasn't been made available to all users, most people with Google Photos will get it and it's been announced that soon it shall roll out for iOS as well. For instance, it can scan a business card or get details about a landmark.

All of the changes that Google had detailed today are meant for developers as they will be the ones putting this first Android P developer preview through its paces. The latest update brings those features across Android devices. In Google's blog post announcing Android P, it mostly focused on key features as well as app-building tools for developers. Google Lens literally turns your Android phone into a visual search engine.

However, not every Android user has the Google Lens app yet. Or, if you photograph something with an address on it, Lens will identify the address and pull up Google Maps directions, saving you from having to type it in.

Lens is created to make sense of the visual world, Google Lens Senior Director of Product Aparna Chennapragada told The Verge. "A new window layout attribute, layoutInDisplayCutoutMode, lets you tell the system how and when lay out your content relative to the cutout area".

This Google Lens' integration is finally rolled out with an update of the Google Photos app. If you've already used it, how did it work for you? Support has been added for HDR VP9 Profile 2 (which will allow you to playback YouTube and Play movies among other on HDR-compatible device), HEIC image encoding, and the Neutral Networks 1.1 API.
