Academy President John Bailey is Being Investigated For Sexual Harassment

Academy President John Bailey is Being Investigated For Sexual Harassment

But Bailey's alleged actions put the academy in the precarious position of choosing how to handle potential misconduct at the organization's highest level.

Motion Picture Academy President John Bailey speaks at the Foreign Language Film nominees cocktail reception in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., March 2, 2018.

Variety reported that the academy, which has a staff of 350 people, opened an investigation on Wednesday upon receiving the complaints.

The latest in a string of public relations crises to hit the academy in recent years, the accusations against Bailey come as the group itself has been navigating the sexual misconduct scandals that have reverberated across the entertainment industry in recent months, sparking the Time's Up movement that loomed large over this year's awards season up to and including the recent Oscar telecast.

Bailey was elected president of the institution in August. If the allegations are deemed serious enough, the committee may refer the issue to the board of governors, which can then vote to suspend or expel a member. They are the only husband-wife board members in Academy history after founding AMPAS members Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford.

'Tomb Raider' review: Lara Croft return feels like leftovers

Arrieta gets a deal he likes, set to join Phillies
Arrieta becomes Philadelphia's fourth big offseason acquisition along with Pat Neshek , Tommy Hunter , andCarlos Santana. By Arrieta's standards, 2017's 3.53 ERA and 1.22 WHIP were a bit subpar as they were his highest marks since 2013.

Since the appointment of Bailey, whose film credits include Groundhog Day, the academy has voted to expel Weinstein while the cinematographer has helped to establish a new code of conduct for the industry.

Bailey, 75, is in his first year as President of The Academy.

Upon his election to a four-year term, succeeding Cheryl Boone Isaacs, there were concerns about whether a 75-year-old white man was best suited to lead the Academy at a time when it is making a push to diversify its membership.

If forced to step down, Bailey would be temporarily replaced by Lois Burwell, a veteran makeup artist who is the Academy's vice president, until the next election in July, according to Variety.

When asked about that by Variety past year, Bailey said, "What you just said is bulls-. Is this some sort of limiting factor?"
