30 feared killed in Burkina Faso terror attack

The Canadian government has strongly condemned an apparent terrorist attack in Burkina Faso's capital on Friday that has killed at least seven people and wounded some fifty others in a coordinated assault on the army headquarters and French embassy.

Heavy gunfire broke out mid morning in the centre of the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou. In the photo from the scene shows a cloud of black smoke rising into the sky.

French government sources said there had been no French casualties and described the situation in Ouagadougou as "under control".

Burkina Faso has been rocked by insecurity since Blaise Compaore was ousted by a popular uprising in 2014.

On February 21, two membes of the French counter-terrorism force were killed by a landmine near Mali's border with Niger and Burkina Faso.

The other targets were the French Embassy and the French Institute.

The Africanews correspondent in Ouagadougou reported that armed men dressed in national military uniforms were seen getting out of cars and firing.

French President Emmanuel Macron was being kept up-to-date, said the Elysée Palace in Paris. The two targets are a few meters away from the prime minister's office in the city. We saw that they had set a vehicle on fire.

The ministry recommended that French residents of Ouagadougou stay confined to a safe place, suspend all travel in town and comply with instructions by local authorities.

The police said one member of the group, who had attempted to flee near the city's main market, was being surrounded by security forces.

Speaking on state television, he said that two paramilitary gendarmes were also killed defending the French embassy, which also came under attack.

Guterres is closely following the news and is concerned over the reported casualties and injuries, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Responsibility for that attack was claimed by the jihadist group al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Burkina Faso's communications minister said eight Islamic extremists died.

The neighborhood also houses other embassies, the prime minister's office and United Nations offices.

The country had earlier contributed troops to join about 4,000 French troops who had been battling insurgents in the Sahel region on the southern rim of the Sahara.

France which is heavily involved in the region it once ruled as a colonial power had led a bid in Paris last month to raise money for the operation of the proposed 5000-strong force from the five G5 Sahel countries.
