Syria: Russian fighter jet downed by rebels over Idlib

The pilot ejected before the crash and was captured, United Kingdom -based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told the BBC.

It was not clear which rebel group was involved, but the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is the most active force in the area.

Russian Federation has launched a bombing campaign against revel groups in Syria in support of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian opposition released footage on social media that purported to show the wreckage of the plane and the body of the pilot surrounded by fighters.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said there had been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours.

The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed. The province is also a base for al-Qaida's branch in Syria and other Islamic groups.

A major Syrian army offensive, begun earlier this year in southern Aleppo and eastern Idlib, has allowed it to take control of a large amount of territory from rebel forces.

A Russian warplane was shot down Saturday in Syria, according to Russian state-run news agencies.

Russian Federation has increased bombing runs in Idlib in the last month, which has resulted in more than one hundred civilian deaths and displaced more than 100,000 people. One of the soldiers was killed when a Turkish tank was hit in Afrin.

The Turkish operation aims to clear Afrin of the US -backed Syrian Kurdish militia, known as the People's Protection Units or YPG, which Turkey considers to be a terrorist group and an extension of the Kurdish insurgency within its borders.

In November 2015, Turkey shot down a Russian military aircraft, which caused a diplomatic crisis between Moscow and Ankara.
