New Horizons probe captures images at record distance from Earth

New Horizons probe captures images at record distance from Earth

At present, the New Horizons probe is at a distance of 6.12 billion km (3.79 billion mi) from Earth.

That image was made at a vantage point of 3.75 billion miles from Earth.

On December 5th, 2017, New Horizons turned its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) to the galactic open star cluster known as the "Wishing Well" and took a shot.

Prior to New Horizons' star shot, the image taken farthest from Earth was one of the Blue Marble snapped by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on February 14, 1990. Captured by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, the images were gathered at a greatest distance from Earth than any in the history of mankind.

New Horizons is headed toward a KBO dubbed 2014 MU69, one of more than 20 far-off chunks of rock and ice NASA hopes to observe during the spacecraft's mission. In a span of just a few hours on December 5, the craft trained its camera first on the glittering "Wishing Well" star cluster (seen below) and then on two objects in the Kuiper Belt (seen above), the huge band of rocks and dwarf planets that rings the outer fringes of our solar system. However, an image captured by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft just smashed Voyager 1's achievement.

"New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched", Alan Stern, New Horizons Principal Investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said in a statement. These efforts could reveal much about the formation and evolution of the Solar System, and are setting records that are not likely to be broken for many more decades!

New quake shakes Taiwan's Hualien
The island sits on the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, which are converging at 80 mm per year. At least nine people were killed and 265 injured in a massive 6.4 quake that struck Taiwan's Hualien city on Wednesday.

Civilian martyred in Indian firing at LoC
Apart from Kundu, others who died were identified as riflemen Ram Avtar and Shubam Singh, and havaldar Roshan Lal. The army officer added that Pakistan has stepped up unprovoked firing and shelling in Kashmir since 23 December.

The photo surpassed the "Pale Blue Dot" images of Earth taken by Voyager 1 back in 1990.

New Horizons flew past Pluto in 2015.

The probe then turned its attention to the distant Kuiper Belt.

On Earth, NASA's Deep Space Network antenna dishes catch the faint signals coming from New Horizons and reassemble the raw data into a usable form.

Getting the images to Earth is no easy task. So long as the mission goes according to plan, New Horizons could hold on to its lead for a long time. From here on out, every image it sends back will be the most distant image ever sent back. Now, it's zipping along at more than 700,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) each day - moving farther and farther out into our solar system.
