Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Controversial Supplement

Some consumers have hailed the drug as a "natural" pain remedy, but some medical experts say it can be unsafe, even deadly.

The agency reported 28 people have been infected with salmonella in 20 states, and 11 of them have been hospitalized.

Eight of 11 people interviewed reported consuming kratom in pills, powder, or tea forms.

Meanwhile, Missouri-based Divinity Products Distribution has promised to recall and destroy kratom-containing products sold across the United States under the brand names Botany Bay, Enhance Your Life and Divinity, the FDA said Wednesday.

According to an official statement released by the FDA, kratom may not appear as an ingredient on those product labels.

Native to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a plant that is typically crushed and made into a tea as a means to treat pain; it can also be chewed, smoked, or ingested in capsules.

Day added that "we've found e. coli in kratom before, and parasites, bugs, all kinds of stuff like that" - which is why she maintains strict quality control over the herbs she obtains from assorted vendors. Evidence suggests that the source of the outbreak is possibly kratom, which is a plant that is used as a substitute to opioids. Schedule I drugs are defined as having no accepted medical use and a high risk for abuse.

CDC stated in an announcement that epidemiologic evidence points to use of kratom, which is also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak. Across the U.S., several reports of deaths and addiction led the Drug Enforcement Administration to place kratom on its list of "drugs and chemicals of concern".

He noted that his agency "is taking new steps to bring new, safe and effective FDA-approved therapies to the market for treatment of opioid use disorder".

Kratom is said to help ease opioid withdrawal, but is sometimes used recreationally.
