Iraqi Kurds say 4000 belonging to IS detained including foreigners

The US has started to reduce its number of troops in Iraq following Baghdad's victory over ISIS a year ago, according to an Iraqi government spokesman and western contractors. "Coordination continues, to maintain (U.S.) assistance to the Iraqi forces in accordance with their requirements".

The U.S. -led global military coalition helped Iraqi forces recapture territory taken by Islamic State in 2014 and 2015, providing air and artillery support in the battle to for Mosul, and trained tens of thousands of elite Iraqi soldiers.

As of late September, there were almost 9,000 USA troops in Iraq, according to the Pentagon.

The U.S. will move troops from Iraq to Afghanistan, however, the shift will not represent a large "exodus" of soldiers from the country, Department of Defence spokesman Eric Pahon told Sputnik.

An AP reporter at the base saw troop movements matching the officials' account. The contractors spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations and declined to reveal the exact size of the drawdown.

Two Iraqi officials confirmed that US -led coalition and Iraqi government have reached an agreement to draw down troops in Iraq.

Despite the reduced number of US troops, ISIS remains a threat, according to American and Iraqi officials.

A Pentagon report released in November said there were 8,892 USA troops in as of late September.

The U.S. first launched airstrikes against the Daesh terror group in Iraq in August 2014. At the time the military intervention was described as "limited", but as Iraq's military struggled to roll back the extremists, the US -led coalition's footprint in the country steadily grew.

Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December 2017, after Iraqi forces eliminated some of the remaining forces of ISIS. Iraq's oil ministry has ordered the state-held North Oil Company to draft "an urgent plan" for rehabilitating the oil fields in Nineveh. In 2014, Daesh (IS) controlled almost a third of Iraqi territory.

Kataib Hezbollah has strong links to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps and has threatened to attack USA forces several times in the past, describing their presence as an occupation. US troop numbers eventually wound down to 40,000 before the complete withdrawal in 2011.
