Ex-NFL Player In Custody After Instagram Post Prompts High School Closure

Out of an abundance of caution, and because the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority, we made the decision to close school today.

Former NFL offensive lineman Jonathan Martin was detained and released Friday after he posted a disturbing photo on his Instagram account that led to the temporary closure of a California high school.

"We have confirmed that he's been located - the suspect, in this case", Sgt.

FILE - In this October 27, 2013 file photo, Miami Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin sits on the bench in the first quarter of an NFL football game against the New England Patriots, in Foxborough, Mass.

After people saw the post, Harvard-Westlake School campuses in Studio City and Beverly Crest were shut down for the day and Martin was detained by police. The photo on his private but verified Instagram account featured a shotgun on a bed surrounded by shells with the caption "When you're a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide or revenge".

Martin has been taken into police custody, according to multiple reports.

Several media outlets, however, including the Los Angeles Times and KABC-TV, were told by law enforcement sources that the person questioned was Martin.

Drake Madison, another LAPD spokesman, told USA TODAY Sports the individual who made the threatening social media post had been detained.

-The message also tags current National Football League players Mike Pouncey and Richie Incognito.

Incognito, Pouncey and two former Harvard-Westlake classmates were tagged in the screen grab of Martin's Instagram story.

Martin was the subject of a much-publicized bullying incident during his second and final season with Miami in 2013.

"At Harvard-Westlake, we try to teach with everything that we do, including teaching how to do things the right way and teaching what's the right way to be with every single thing we do - arts, academics, athletics, operations, everything", Barzdukas said in the article.

The former lineman hasn't played since 2015.

"You learn to tone down your size and blackness by becoming shy, introverted, friendly, so you won't scare the little rich white kids or their parents", Martin wrote. He also detailed previous struggles with football, saying he didn't fit in at Harvard-Westlake. "It takes away your self-confidence, your self-worth, your sanity". "I think that we will continue to try to improve upon that".
