Cyril Ramaphosa elected new South African leader

Ajay Gupta is considered to be a fugitive after he failed to turn himself in, police told South African media.

The court ordered lawmakers to create rules to regulate a president's impeachment, raising the possibility that a sitting Zuma would have faced proceedings this year. Only one candidate has been nominated, namely, the honourable Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, the nomination is in order.

"The issues that you have raised, issues that have to do with corruption, issues of how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with state capture (influence-peddling) are issues that are on our radar screen", he said.

But ANC leaders rejected that plan and called on Zuma to resign immediately.

Embattled South African president Jacob Zuma has said he is resigning "with immediate effect". The opposition is right to demand early elections, which probably would not suit Ramaphosa.

Ratings agency Moody's said it was closely monitoring developments in South Africa, focusing on the policy implications of Ramaphosa's arrival as president.

Zuma resigned after years of scandals that damaged the stature of the ruling African National Congress party.

The political turnaround saw benchmark South African stocks scoring their biggest gains since June 2016 following news that the pro-business reformist would be taking the helm.

(Under the South African constitution, parliament elects the president, and the ANC still has an overwhelming majority of MPs.) Ramaphosa will then proceed to appoint his cabinet.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was confirmed as president until 2019 general elections.

Yesterday, the speaker agreed to move their motion forward to February 15 and to incorporate ANC amendments that outline the governing party's reasons for Zuma's removal.

The EFF walked out moments after Parliament had convened.

The party left the chamber in protest ahead of his nomination.

The accused were released on bail ranging from 10,000 rand ($857) to 200,000 rand with strict conditions and are scheduled to appear again in court on August 17, the Hawks said. The president also acknowledged Zuma's continued role in the development agenda and economic welfares of the two states.

Nevertheless, it is unlikely that the ANC leadership, long intimidated by Zuma, has ever spoken to him in such plain terms.

Zuma's hold over the ANC was broken in December when his chosen successor - his former wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - narrowly lost to Ramaphosa in a vote to become the new party leader.

"It would be gratifying to see the dedication and objective the ANC put into ridding itself of Zuma now be directed into rebuilding the economy, dealing with the corruption still residing in the ANC and improving its shoddy governance record". Zuma has denied wrongdoing.

The suspects who appeared in court in Bloemfontein face charges including money-laundering, fraud and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act and the Companies Act, eNCA reporter Karyn Maughan said on her verified Twitter account.

Parliament is set to elect a new president Thursday afternoon.

Zuma, in power since 2009, resigned on Wednesday after being accused of corruption, prompting the opposition to repeatedly call for his resignation.

The party's national executive committee had ordered Zuma's recall from office on Tuesday, after a 13-hour meeting at a hotel outside Pretoria, but he at first refused.

But he leaves office with several scandals hanging over him, and with South Africa's economy in dire straits.
