British Government Temporarily Halts New Funding to Aid Group Oxfam

British Government Temporarily Halts New Funding to Aid Group Oxfam

"From the bottom of my heart, I am asking for forgiveness", Byanyima said, adding she wants all victims of abuse to come forward.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said today that Oxfam has agreed not to bid for further funding from her department until the British government believes its "high standards" can be met.

Evans, who headed a "safeguarding" section responsible for protecting staff and the people Oxfam works with, spoke of frustration that her calls for more support for her team were not taken seriously enough.

Oxfam Ireland has said it will play a "leadership role" as the global charity works to introduce reforms to "root out any form of abuse".

"I'm appointing a high-level, independent commission that will look into our culture and our practices and make recommendations to make us stronger at protecting our people", she told the BBC.

Mark Goldring, the Chief Executive of Oxfam, has lambasted the intensity of the criticism levied against his organisation over claims that its workers used prostitutes in Haiti.

After meeting Oxfam officials on Monday, Mordaunt said she had written to all British charities working overseas to demand that "they step up and do more, so that we have absolute assurance that the moral leadership, the systems, the culture and the transparency that are needed". I struggle to understand it.

The British branch of Oxfam has been rocked by allegations that some of the charity's aid workers used prostitutes in Haiti following the 2010 natural disaster.

It came after Archbishop Desmond Tutu announced he was retiring from his Oxfam ambassador role over the British charity's handling of sexual misconduct allegations
UK Is No Longer Funding Oxfam Because Its Aide Workers Are Apparently Perverts

He also disclosed that one of the men sacked after being accused of using prostitutes was given a job reference from the charity, but it was written by a colleague who was too fired over the allegations.

"I think (her criticism) was very unbalanced, and ironically didn't give enough credit to the very work that she promoted", he told the paper.

"The hardest thing is that my family has rejected me", he said.

Reforms announced on Friday include more than doubling the number of people working in Oxfam's safeguarding processes while more than tripling the annual funding to £720,000.

Oxfam, one of the world's biggest disaster relief charities, said an internal investigation in 2011 confirmed sexual misconduct occurred, and has apologised.

They are also setting up a global database of accredited referees to ensure sex offenders can not re-offend at other charities, and improving the organisation's "whistleblowing mechanism".

The organisation has said that the names of the men involved have already been shared with the Haitian authorities.
