USA government shuts down for the 18th time

USA government shuts down for the 18th time

The US government on Saturday shut down after a period of five years as Congress failed to overcome standoff over spending and immigration. The Trump administration would support a similar measure, a senior administration official said on Friday. Many government workers will probably cut back their own spending during the shutdown.

U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo, who serves as chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of IL, which operates the federal courthouses in Chicago and Rockford, said the district court has enough funding in reserve to maintain current operations levels for "about 3 weeks".

For Trump, the shutdown is particularly embarrassing since it went into effect on the exact moment that the calendar flipped over to January 20 - the anniversary of his inauguration as President.

If the government were to shut down, the military is considered essential and would still report for duty.

Dan Poppe, president of the Archer (Nebraska) Cooperative Credit Union, said that was a "nuisance" for those farmers at the time and that his credit union offered customers short-term loans.

Beyond the stock market, analysts say that because of lost activity during a shutdown, the USA economy overall may slow down for a bit.

However, many civilian federal workers would be furloughed without pay starting Monday.

The good news for anyone anxious about the impact of another shutdown is that consumer confidence and business confidence is much stronger today than it was in 2013.

"It will look very different than under the previous administration", Mulvaney said at a White House briefing.

Fatimah Baeshen, the first spokeswomen to work for the Saudi embassy in Washington, also commented on the historic move. Saudi women were allowed to attend a soccer game between two local teams in Jeddah on Friday.

Other agencies have residual funds that will keep them operating for several days.

For example, officials are making it clear to the National Park Service that it should keep parks and monuments open that require minimal staffing.

The National Park Service estimated the shutdown resulted in $US500 million ($626 million) in lost visitor spending in areas around the parks and the Smithsonian museums across Washington DC, New York and Virginia. But the longer the shutdown continues, the more likely its impact will be felt.

During the 2013 shutdown, the Medicare health insurance program for the elderly continued largely without disruption.

"I am still hopeful that Congress will agree to a permanent solution that addresses DACA and strengthens our national security". Moreover, the CDC's ability to disease outbreaks will be greatly reduced. Republicans were saddled with the blame, but most Americans suffered relatively minor inconveniences such as closed parks and delays in processing passport applications.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be staffed at about 78 percent, meaning more than 15,000 of the agency's employees will keep working.

MAIL DELIVERY: Deliveries would continue as usual because the U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for day-to-day operations.

Veterans Affairs hospitals will remain open and veterans' benefits will continue, but education assistance and case appeals would be delayed, the department said.

The Department of Energy said that since most of its appropriations are for multiple years, employees should report to work as normal during a shutdown until told otherwise. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, soldiers and air-traffic controllers would stay on the job even as other federal workers are furloughed. If there was a prolonged lapse in funding a "limited number" of workers may be placed on furlough.
