US Supreme Court rejects challenge to MS law curbing LGBT rights

US Supreme Court rejects challenge to MS law curbing LGBT rights

"Because of that, we are pleased that the Supreme Court declined to take up these baseless challenges, which misrepresented the law's sole goal of ensuring that Mississippians don't live in fear of losing their careers or their businesses simply for affirming marriage as a husband-wife union". The Apex court will now revisit it's 2013 verdict that criminalizes gay sex. But earlier petitions to review the ban were overturned by the court.

The Mississippi Center for Justice and Lambda Legal joined civil-rights attorney Rob McDuff of Jackson in filing the appeal to the Supreme Court on behalf of 11 individuals, while the Joshua Generation Metropolitan Community Church and Campaign for Southern Equality appealed the law's constitutionality. Justice GS Singhvi and Justice S J Mukhopadhaya, who pronounced the verdict, justified its order by saying, "The High Court overlooked that a minuscule fraction of the country's population constitute lesbians, gays, bisexuals or transgenders and in last more than 150 years, less than 200 persons have been prosecuted for committing offence under Section 377". It was also on the side of respecting the freedom of individuals to their sexual orientation.

Reopening the debate on Indian Penal Code's Article 377, the three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by CJI Dipak Misra said, "it would reconsider and examine the Constitutional validity of section 377".

Style arsenal, including AR-15, was stashed in Houston Hyatt Regency room
When officers arrived, they eventually found an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun, and plenty of ammo in the man's room, police said. It comes as cities across the United States and around the world step up security for New Year's Eve celebrations.

After long years of deliberation, the Delhi High Court legalised gay sex among consenting adults in July 2009. While prosecutions under section 377 have been rare, activists have said that the police used the law to harass and intimidate members of the LGBT community. A promising sign, the Court also asked the government to respond to a petition from five LGBTQ people who said they live in fear of police due to their identities. The three-judge bench took their knowledge views expressed in another judgment in August, which gave the right to privacy the status of a fundamental right. The petitioners said they live in constant fear of police action due to their sexual preferences. The LGBTQ community remains in harm's way every single day that this law is in effect, and we are committed to working with our legal partners to strike this draconian measure once and for all.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused an important hearing concerning fighting anti-LGBTQ law. "We think it appropriate to send this issue to a larger bench", they said.
