Trump target at Federal Bureau of Investigation leaving his top position at agency

Trump target at Federal Bureau of Investigation leaving his top position at agency

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who has been a target of unrelenting criticism from President Trump, abruptly announced his resignation Monday, according to a senior government official who was not authorized to comment publicly on personnel matters.

Trump reportedly met with McCabe at the Oval Office after the firing of FBI Director James Comey last May, and asked him whom he voted for in 2016.

McCabe already had meant to retire this spring, but his presence at the bureau had increasingly become a focal point of anger for Trump, who continues to fume about the special counsel investigation into his campaign's dealings with Russian Federation.

Yet as recently as last month, Trump seized on McCabe's role in the Clinton inquiry and his wife's political bid, noting that Jill McCabe received almost $470,000 from a political action committee associated with Clinton ally and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

McCabe joined the bureau in the mid-1990s.

Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has alleged that McCabe also violated the Hatch Act by emailing about his wife's campaign from his Federal Bureau of Investigation email account. Asked about how people should view Trump's frequent Twitter tirades against McCabe, Sanders said the President is simply doing the public a favor.

McCabe, who assumed his position as deputy director in 2016 and had planned to retire this spring, has come under fire from the USA president in recent weeks.

McCabe has also been at the center of major developments in the Russian Federation investigation.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Monday (Tuesday, NZ time) the White House was not involved in McCabe's decision to leave weeks before his planned retirement.

"We have seen the numerous reports as you all have seen", she said during the daily White House briefing.

Mr. Trump did not respond to a reporters inquiry at the White House, according to CNN. Some supporters of Trump have suggested that McCabe sought to trap Flynn in that interview, though there has been no evidence that that is the case.
