Tesla's Autopilot Blamed For Freeway Accident

Tesla's Autopilot Blamed For Freeway Accident

The Tesla Model S, while reportedly on "Autopilot" mode, smashed into the rear of a fire truck parked at a freeway accident scene.

A tweet by the local firefighter's union Monday showed a photo of a Tesla Model S with its nose wedged under the back end of a fire truck and its hood badly wrinkled. The driver reports the Tesla was on autopilot and he was not paying attention.

Tesla responded to both incidents by reiterating previous comments stating that its autonomous technology is only meant to assist drivers, not replace them. Driver explained Tesla had been set on autopilot.

Tesla would also recommend that drivers stay sober, something one owner seemingly forgot over the weekend.

However, the feature is "intended for use only with a fully attentive driver", according to company officials cited by media.

Tesla Model S on autopilot rams fire truck in Culver City. But the thing was flying along at 65 miles-per-hour and the crash scared the heck out of the men and women assigned to Engine 42. Yet the driver claims that he was operating the vehicle on Autopilot. But that reliance was the result of Autopilot's design, which allowed for the driver to actually disengage from "the driving task" for prolonged periods of time, the board said.

- A auto crash on an interstate in California could be the first of its kind. Lights on the vehicles were also flashing.

"All you will need to do is get in and tell your auto where to go", the company states. It wasn't just any auto. The company claims it's tried to educate drivers on how to safely operate the system, but critics have pointed out that many owners still don't understand how truly limited Autopilot really is. This could be the vehicle changing lanes or suddenly accelerating when someone puts on a turn signal. The investigators would focus on the actions of the driver and how the vehicle performed, O'Neil said. The change reduced the period of time before the "Autopilot" system issues a warning/alert when the driver's hands are off the steering wheel.

In its report, the National Transportation Safety Board cited Joshua Brown's over-reliance on the autopilot.
