Statue of Liberty reopens with state aid during gov't shutdown

Governor Andrew Cuomo says a deal was struck with the Department of the Interior, allowing the statue to remain open.

O'Meara was in NY working as part of a team helping to train fellow NY firefighters in hazardous materials.

The doors to the Statue of Liberty will reopen Monday - despite the fed shutdown of all non-essential government services.

They're part of the National Park Service.

"In many ways, this shutdown in Washington, to me takes us back to that fundamental concept, which is they are against immigration", Cuomo said.

NY stepped in and kept open the federal park in 2013 during the last shutdown, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday he has reached an agreement with the National Park Service to do the same this time.

As in shutdowns past, federal services were carved into two categories - essential and non-essential - with the former set to carry on as normal. But in Philadelphia, visitors were turned away at the Liberty Bell.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States in 1886 to honor the centenary of USA independence 10 years earlier. During the shutdown, at least half of the daily $55,000 or so in revenue would be lost.

While it is unclear how long the shutdown will last, here's what is closed and what is open during the shutdown. Funds ran out at midnight Friday, leaving 48 hours before the most dramatic effect — the furloughing of almost 1 million federal employees — takes place.

The federal government shut down early Saturday morning as Democrats and Republicans continued to remain deadlocked over Trump's proposed all along the Mexican border and the fate of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the USA illegally as children.

In an unusual move, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, whose department oversees the parks service, said on Twitter that he had personally helped welcome visitors to the World War II memorial on the National Mall in Washington.

"To get this close where you can see them, and the government shuts them down - that's very, very frustrating", said Dan O'Meara, a firefighter from Fresno, California, who is descended from an Irish immigrant family that entered through Ellis Island.

Government workers were struggling with the uncertainty that comes with not knowing when or if they will get paid, union leaders said. And Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park and other federally managed natural areas in Florida were partially closed.
