Lok Sabha Passes Bill Allowing Ayurveda, Homeopathy Doctors to Practice Allopathy

According to IMA Goa President Ajay Pednekar the routine OPD services of clinics and hospital across Goa will remain closed from 6 am to 6 pm on January 2.

The Bill also proposes a common entrance exam and licentiate (exit) exam which all medical graduates will have to clear to get practising licences. The protests come as the Bill is set to be taken up for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday.

"We will close outpatient services to send out a message that the Bill is draconian", said Dr B Veeranna, secretary, Indian Medical Association, Bengaluru.

The IMA claimed that it has the support of over 25,000 doctors from the government and private sector as well as 10,000 medical students in the state.

The bill also has provisions for allowing doctors under Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and homeopathy, to be allowed to practice allopathy after a six-month bridge course. Senior doctors from IMA are protesting another proposal of NMC which allows unrestricted fee in 60 per cent of medical seats in private medical colleges. We have been discussing the National Medical Commission Bill with the government since a year.

"Unscientific mixing of systems and empowering of other practitioners through bridge courses will only pave the way for substandard doctors and substandard medical practice".
