Jones, Thome elected to Baseball Hall of Fame, Bonds, Clemens wait

Jones, Thome elected to Baseball Hall of Fame, Bonds, Clemens wait

Former Cleveland Indians infielder/designated hitter Jim Thome did not have to wait long for selection to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Third baseman Chipper Jones and first baseman Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) have been elected in their first year of eligibility.

Whether that will ever occur with Roger Clemens (57.3) and Barry Bonds (56.4) remains in question.

Their absence leaves the edifice more hollowed than hallowed, a shrine with a history that remains both incomplete and scrubbed.

Jones said that even though all signs indicated beforehand that would be a first-time inductee, he was nervous until he got the call.

There are now 323 people in the Hall, including a rush of 23 elected by the BBWAA and veterans panels in the last five years.

Ceremonies will take place in Cooperstown from July 27-30.

Back to Clemens (57.3 percent) and Bonds (56.4 percent), who both saw their vote total increase, but not to the extent they did previous year, when each saw about a nine percent jump.

His total of 612 homers ranks eighth in baseball history, and he sits 26th in career RBIs with 1,699 and seventh in walks with 1,747. The former All-Star reliever received 10.2 percent of the votes last year and 10.5 percent of the votes in his first year of eligibility two years ago.

Clemens and Bonds both failed to clear 60 percent, but edged up about 3 percentage points. Eight votes separated the two then, so maybe there's progress on that front. Schilling was at 52.3 percent in 2016 but dropped down a year ago after sharing on Twitter a photo that suggested journalists should be lynched.

Sanders Lies About Trump Benefiting from Tax Bill
He also offered to give the pens he used to sign the legislation to members of the media assembled in the Oval Office. Trump said he signed the bill now to keep a promise that he would cut taxes in time for Christmas.

Jones' name was on 97.2 percent of the ballots.

They have a growing number of supporters, which is quite encouraging.

Vlad Guerrero received 92.9% of the vote in his second time on the ballot.

Just a few short years later, Hoffman would make his Major League debut on April 6, 1993 with the Florida Marlins.

There was an outcry in 2013 when no candidate reached 75 percent.

If only it were that easy and assured. However, with another Rockie, Todd Helton, being on the Hall of Fame ballot starting in 2019, will he see the same issues as Walker has? I happen to disagree, but as we know, the debate about the steroids era still rages.

"They seem to be inching up toward that 75 percent", he said, referring to Bonds and Clemens. "It's unfortunate that some of the best players of this era have a cloud of suspicion, because you're talking about some all-timers".

They'll need a big stage in Cooperstown once again this summer.

Isn't it likely some alleged cheaters already are in the Hall? It's fantastic now to see the young Canadians coming up now, and us, we're passing the torch on. "If steroid users get in, it will divide and diminish the Hall, something we couldn't bear".
