East Coast locked in wickedly cold weekend of subzero temps

East Coast locked in wickedly cold weekend of subzero temps

A massive winter storm that will "in many ways resemble a hurricane" is expected to hit the East Coast of the U.S., bringing heavy snow and some of the coldest temperatures in more than a century.

By the time the storm reaches the ocean waters east of Long Island and eastern New England on Thursday, it will be explosively intensifying.

Scattered fatalities were reported, including a auto passenger who died after a vehicle on Thursday couldn't stop at the bottom of a steep, snow-covered hill and slammed into a commuter train on its way to Philadelphia. It slammed into a commuter train, killing a passenger in the vehicle, but no one on the train was hurt.

What that's actually referring to is when a storm "bombs out" which is when the central pressure of a storm decreases at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

What is a bomb cyclone?

Winter Storm Warnings are still up for the coastal areas of north Georgia through Virginia.

Forecasters said the night-time temperature would fall below freezing in Tallahassee this week. Although Florida's panhandle saw snow in December, this latest bitter blast left many awestruck with the rare weather event.

National Weather Service hurricane hunter aircraft are even flying into the storm to gather data and refine the forecast given the possible severe impacts in coastal areas.

In Quincy, Massachusetts, one street turned into an icy river.

Officials issued storm warnings for parts of Florida and Georgia, the eastern Carolinas, southeast Virginia and the cities of Savannah, Ga.; Charleston and Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; and Norfolk, Va.

Although this sort of storm is seen in North East US every winter, its effects are far more powerful this time around.

Around Boston, the National Weather Service reported that howling winds sent the icy high tide to historic levels. In New England, Grayson is expected to turn into an all-out blizzard that could dump a foot of snow along with 40 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts.

A hungry buck didn't appear bothered by the storm in Staten Island.

And in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that all public schools would also be closed Thursday due to the storm. Low around 22. East wind 5 to 13 miles per hour becoming north after midnight.

Because air and ground temperatures are both well below freezing, snow will stick to all untreated surfaces, causing slipperiness. Power outage is also a concern, the NWS said.

About 3,000 airline flights within, into or out of the United States were cancelled ahead of the storm's arrival on Thursday. More than three-fourths of all flights in or out of New York City are either canceled or delayed, the flight-tracking site says.

While the storm is fast moving and will likely be gone by Friday, it will leave extremely cold temperatures in its wake.

The National Weather Service is upping the ante a bit.
