Balsamo reported from Los Angeles. Their bail is set at $13 million.

"I saw them about 7 or 8pm on Saturday", an unnamed neighbour told The Mirror.

They were permitted to bathe just once a year, Hestrin said, and if they washed their hands above their wrists, they would be chained up as punishment for playing with water.

The Turpins' relatives said they were also in the dark, and recounted being rebuffed when they tried to have a relationship with the family.

"I couldn't believe it when I saw their pictures on the TV two nights later".

Sheriff deputies arrested the Turpins after receiving an emergency call from a 17-year-old victim who managed to escape.

The case has made headlines around the world as law enforcement officials have described a devastating image of the home life of the Turpin children, who have allegedly been starved and kept in a home filled with smell and filth, with some of them even chained to beds.

A judge in California has issued a protective order banning the parents of 13 - aged between two and 29 - allegedly held captive in a suburban home in Perris, Riverside County, from contacting them for three years. The father is also charged with one count of lewd act on a child.

Since news of the case broke last week, the county's Children's Services Division said it has received many offers from parents asking to take in all 13 of the children. "I didn't get that in depth with them, but I knew they were a fun family".

The school said Dr Turpin has been on leave to deal with "revelations about estranged family members".

He authored the 2016 book 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, which promises to "help bring a person to a place of personal freedom". The kids were able to read and write, however, and expressed themselves in hundreds of journals that police seized from the home, he said.

"Well, David's so tall and lanky", Teresa Robinette remembers her sister saying.

"We've heard that all the adult kids are together at the hospital, why is that?" "That way even if they are scattered they would still be with our family and they would still have a connection for life".

Riverside County district judge Emma Smith told the Turpins: "You must not harass, strike, threaten, assault, follow, stalk, molest, destroy or damage property of or disturb the peace of, keep under surveillance or block the entrance of the people listed in the [protective] order".

The son, who is in his 20s, attended Mt. San Jacinto College.

Authorities last week said that David and Louise Turpin were "unable to immediately provide a logical reason" why the siblings were shackled and chained and that Louise Turpin seemed "perplexed" by the investigators' questions. He remembers them wearing matching outfits of blue shirts and tan trousers and that the children appeared small and pale.
