Bikram hot yoga not better than regular yoga says a study

Bikram hot yoga not better than regular yoga says a study

Practicing yoga at room temperature works just as well as Bikram yoga.

According to a recent study into the effects of heated yoga on heart health, you get the same benefits practicing yoga at normal temperatures as you do when you practice in heated conditions.

"We were surprised by the result that a non-heated practice seemed to have the same benefit on vascular health as the heated practice", admitted study author Stacy Hunter.

But it is now more often known as hot yoga, following a scandal involving pioneer Bikram Choudhury, who has faced accusations of rape and sexual assault by former students. As such, vigorous vasodilation may ultimately slow or delay hardening of the arteries, which is a known risk factor for heart attack or stroke.

In a new study, researchers at the University of Texas compared 40 traditional yoga participants to those undertaking hot Bikram over 12 weeks.

Conducted by scientists from Texas State University and the University of Texas at Austin, the study included 52 middle-aged test subjects who were split into three groups.

United States lawmakers urge AT&T to cut all ties with Huawei
Nearly all phones and electronics - including most "American" or "European" phones - are made in China. Another is using handsets made by Huawei by Cricket, the discount subsidiary of AT&T.

One of the yoga groups exercised in a room heated to 40.5 C, the other at 23 C. Unsurprisingly, the group who remained sedentary saw no change in their vascular health.

The difference in participants' blood vessels was measured after three months of yoga sessions, done three times a week for 90 minutes.

A study published in the journal Experimental Physiology found that yoga was beneficial regardless of whether it was done in a hot room or at ambient temperature.

Dr. Gregg Fonarow, co-director of the UCLA Preventative Cardiology Program in Los Angeles, cautioned there is no solid evidence to suggest that any form of yoga offers a leg up when it comes to heart health.

"These novel findings highlight the effectiveness of hatha yoga postures alone, in the absence of a heated practice environment, in improving vascular health and are of clinical significance given the increased propensity toward heat intolerance in aging adults", the authors wrote.

There's more on yoga and heart health at the American Heart Association.
