Backed Syria force denies Islamic State in area targeted by Turkey

Backed Syria force denies Islamic State in area targeted by Turkey

The Syrian Kurdish militia has been the closest US ally in the fight against the Islamic State group in Syria.

USA officials see the Turkish offensive as distracting from efforts to ensure ISIS militants in the region are defeated. Despite a suggestion by President Donald Trump two months ago that the U.S. might end military supplies to the YPG, the USA is continuing to provide arms and advisors, although Mattis said "we are reducing" American forces as ISIS loses ground.

At least 27 civilians, including eight children and four women, have been killed in the fighting in Afrin, mainly in Turkish airstrikes, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group that monitors the civil war.

The Observatory said the offensive took control of two villages so far.

"The Turkish state has been trying to enter north Syria for days, but it will not be able to", said Siyamand Walat, the general commander of the self-defense forces in the north.

Turkish troops and allied Syrian forces launched an offensive on Afrin on Saturday, aiming to push back a Kurdish militia that Ankara views as a threat.

Although Turkey has always been incensed by US military support for Syrian Kurdish fighters, calling them terrorists, the USA could make a compelling case while the Kurds spearheaded the anti-IS fight.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had also discussed Turkey's military operation Erdogan by phone and that Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty had to be respected. It's one of two Turkish towns that's been hit by rockets since the Olive Branch Operation began. They were deployed there last March to deter Turkish and US -backed rebels from attacking each other and have also carried out training missions in Manbij.

"We are in full readiness to respond to any attack".

The United States and Russian Federation both have military forces in Syria backing opposing sides and have called for restraint on the part of Ankara's "Operation Olive Branch" to crush the YPG in the Afrin region near Turkey's southern border.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Twitter that 1st Lt. Oguz Kaan Usta was killed Tuesday.

"This operation will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated", Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.

On Monday, the Kurdish-led SDF announced that they are considering sending reinforcements to Afrin amid the Turkish operation there.

Some 350 Kurds burned images of the presidents of Turkey and Russia as they marched on the USA and Russian embassies in the Cypriot capital Nicosia to protest Turkey's "invasion" of a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria. France and the European Union have made similar comments to those made by Mattis.

Turkey deems the YPG as a terror group belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party.

The foreign ministry of Qatar - Turkey's closest Gulf ally - gave its unequivocal backing to the operation. -Indonesian military ties. His visit to Jakarta is an early demonstration of a key tenet of the new US defense strategy that Mattis announced last Friday, namely that Washington will work to nurture existing alliances and partnerships and build new ones.

Erdogan said on Monday that the offensive had been agreed with Russian Federation but this has not been confirmed by Moscow.

But whatever diplomatic noises Washington makes now that an apparently long-planned Turkish offensive is underway, Erdogan's decision to go ahead underlines the limits of U.S. influence. Turkey's previous incursion into Syria was the Euphrates Shield campaign in August 2016-March 2017, targeting both the YPG and IS in an area east of Afrin.

The thorniest issue between the U.S. and Turkey - the YPG question - has played out against the backdrop of the increasingly complex Syrian conflict.
