Singing in parliament after same-sex vote

Singing in parliament after same-sex vote

And though many were upset by how long it took for the LGBT+ population to be served equal rights, a feeling of relief was palpable across the site. Three-quarters of Australians, or nearly 12 million people (74.5% of the country's eligible voters), gave a resounding "yes" to the survey, and it prompted the Australian government to begin debating the issue in Parliament.

The bill was introduced in parliament by the conservative government after Australians last month endorsed the reforms in a controversial voluntary postal vote.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull excitedly said it was "time for more marriages, more equality, more love".

During the Lower House debate, more than 100 MPs spoke for over 28 hours on the proposed Bill.

"They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love".

Activists have praised the passage of this bill as a historical landmark and a symbol of the progress made by Australia's LGBT community.

The House struck down multiple amendments from former prime minister Tony Abbott, Treasurer Scott Morrison, junior members Michael Sukkar and Alex Hawke, Andrew Hastie, Andrew Broad, and Sarah Henderson, Sky News reported.

The same-sex marriage bill passed the Senate 43-12 last Wednesday.

"This Parliament, when we passed the marriage equality law, is not a gift from us to LGBTIQ Australians, equality is never a gift to be given".

Turnbull told Parliament that while nothing in the bill threatened religious freedoms, he wanted more reassurances for the millions of Australians who oppose marriage equality.

In the end, 61.6% of Australia voted in favor of allowing same-sex marriage, with 38.4% saying "no".

Liberal MP Tim Wilson has just proposed to his long-time partner, Ryan, during the same-sex marriage debate in Parliament.
