Sid Meier's Civilization VI is now available on iPad

The game is free to try out for the first 60 turns.

And it's not the trial version or some joke-half of game. You can buy Civilization VI in the iOS App Store for $30 until January 4.

While an earlier cut-down entry in the franchise, Civilization Revolution, was available on consoles and tablets, this marks the first time a "full" flagship entry in the strategy franchise is playable on iOS.

But Civilization VI's price has split the gaming community into warring factions.

Civilization VI is now available on iPad and costs $30 United States dollars for a limited time, Aspyr Media announced.

The pricing is essentially unprecedented, even for a mobile port of a full PC/console game. Setting the price for the iPad version to the same as it sells for on Steam for PC is a bold move, and unprecedented for a mobile port. For comparison's sake, 2K charged $19.99 at launch for the iOS port of XCOM: Enemy Unknown back in 2013.

The Civilization series has suffered through a variety of lacklustre mobile ports that have failed to replicate the full Civ experience, but Aspyr's take on Civ VI is the real deal, with it emulating the original game piece-by-piece. The port does not support controllers. Same specifics like works, maps, leaders and technology. Aspyr's FAQ points out one difference: The iPad version's multiplayer modes work only on a local network "as of this point". It's unclear if the company had to make any compromises to get Civilization 6 to run on an iPad.

The Civilization 6 iPad port will apparently be a near-complete port of the original game, though the upcoming Rise and Fall expansion and apparently other DLC won't be included along with it. Aspyr has said, however, that they plan to implement DLC sometime in the future even if they can't now guarantee a timeline. Plus, there are no DLC packs available.
