Senior UN Official in North Korea for Talks

Senior UN Official in North Korea for Talks

The UN Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs met North Korea's Foreign Minister in Pyongyang on Thursday.

Lavrov then conveyed the offer on Monday when United Nations official, Jeffrey Feltman met North Korea's foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho in Pyongyang during the first United Nations visit to the country in six years.

He arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a stay expected to last four or five days.

The KCNA reported that North Korea told UN officials that current situation on the Korean Peninsula is due to the United States' threat and its wish to launch a nuclear attack against North Korea first.

North Korea hates such displays of American military might at close range and typically uses strong language to condemn them as invasion rehearsals.

Both the UN delegation and the North Korean representatives acknowledged that Feltman's visit contributed to deepening the understanding between North Korea and the UN Secretariat, and both sides agreed to maintain communications through visits at different levels on a regular basis in the future, North Korea's state-owned news agency added.

Russian Federation positioning itself to make U.S. irrelevant in North Korean nuclear crisis
While Russia condemned North Korea's latest missile test, Lavrov also raised concerns about the large-scale U.S. He also complained that the United States was "totally ignoring" a U.N. demand for talks with North Korea.

North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly criticizing senior US administration officials' "bellicose remarks" and the ongoing military exercises.

The message comes amid a mixture of hardline and more moderate positions on Pyongyang within the Trump administration since North Korea's ICBM test launch on November 29.

North Korea invited Feltman for a "policy dialogue" when Ri was in NY in September for the U.N. General Assembly, according to a U.N. spokesman.

Analysts in South Korea say the visit is a significant gesture for North Korea. The North recently launched its most advanced missile to date and the USA and South Korea are now holding joint exercises with some of the world's most powerful fighter aircraft.

Pyongyang is seeking US recognition as a nuclear weapons state.
