Palestinians slam 'unacceptable' United States veto of Jerusalem UN resolution

Palestinians slam 'unacceptable' United States veto of Jerusalem UN resolution

Explaining the negative vote, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said it had been done to protect her country's sovereignty and its right to choose where to have its embassy.

Soon after the clash at the top United Nations body, the White House announced that US Vice President Mike Pence was delaying a trip to the Middle East planned for this week.

Trump also plans to move the U.S. embassy to from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The draft, written by Egypt, said any decisions on the status of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded".

The rare use of the United States veto to block the vote was not an embarrassment, Haley said, but should embarrass the other council members.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately thanked Haley for her stance.

"All countries except for the Trump administration acted in unison in this vote".

Trump, breaking away from decades-old US policy of neutrality on the issue, announced on December 6 to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordered to move the USA embassy to the disputed holy city.

Resolutions presented to the council require nine votes for adoption, but the United States - along with Britain, China, France and Russian Federation - have the power to veto any measure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video on his Twitter account in which he thanked Haley for the USA veto.

Since the advent of Trump's presidency, United States policy has grown increasingly hostile towards the Palestinian factions, edging closer in support of Israel. "Thank you, Nikki Haley".

Prior to the Jerusalem decision, a fracture emerged last month when Trump threatened to close the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Washington office.

Trump's declaration unleashed widespread anger and rallies within Palestine and in major cities across the world.

"The United States chooses to disregard global law and ignore the worldwide consensus", he charged.

Pence's trip to Egypt and Israel was pushed back to mid-January to allow the USA vice president to remain in Washington during a vote on Trump's tax bill, a White House official said.

Israel took over East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and declared the whole city of Jerusalem as its eternal capital in 1980. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, as the capital of their future independent state. Apart from that, the draft calls on countries not to recognize any actions or measures that run counter to the Security Council resolutions and to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in that city.

Francois Delattre, France's ambassador to the United Nations, said his country regretted the U.S. decision over Jerusalem.

The US veto came almost a year after the previous US administration abstained in a council vote condemning Israeli settlements, allowing that measure to pass. The last time the USA had vetoed a resolution was in 2011 when a motion condemning the building of Israeli settlements in Jerusalem and the occupied territories was moved.

"This draft resolution confirms an worldwide consensus on Jerusalem that has been built over decades", said Delattre. Any outcome of such a session is non-binding, but carries political weight.
