McConnell eases stance on Moore, says voters should 'make the call'

McConnell eases stance on Moore, says voters should 'make the call'

GOP candidate Roy Moore is ahead of Democrat Doug Jones by 2.5 percentage points, according to the polling average calculated by Real Clear Politics, a considerable tightening since Moore faced allegations of sexual misconduct.

The poll, conducted among 739 likely Alabama voters from November 27-30, has a 4.5-point margin of error.

The survey shows that allegations of improper sexual behavior against Moore, a former Alabama chief justice, hang heavily over a race that would favor a Republican under ordinary circumstances in this deeply conservative state. Moore has repeatedly denied that any of the incidents took place. Seventy-one percent say they don't believe the women who have come forward, compared to 17 percent who say they do.

President Donald Trump has also said the decision should be up to Alabama voters, discounting the allegations against Moore and saying that electing a Democrat to the seat formerly held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions "would be a disaster".

During an interview on ABC's "This Week", McConnell was asked whether he thinks Moore should be in the Senate.

The island's main airport is for now operating normally, but some airlines have cancelled flights. Increased volcanic activity had prompted fears a major eruption was imminent.

Meanwhile, a CBS News/You Gov poll shows that 71 percent of Alabama Republicans believe the allegations against Moore are false, and almost all those believe that Democrats and the media concocted the allegations.

The Fox News Poll sample of 649 likely voters included 48 percent Republicans, 42 percent Democrats, and ten percent independents, which appears to be an unusual oversampling of Democrats and undersampling of Republicans.

The Washington Post says only 35% of likely voters polled say they believe Moore made unwanted sexual advances on teen girls four decades ago.

Other key Republicans have called for Moore to drop out of the race, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan and two former Republican presidential nominees, Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain. Like Trump, Moore has not given any ground, instead attempting to poke holes in picayune details surrounding the accusations against him.
