Israel retaliates against rocket fire with Gaza airstrike

Israel retaliates against rocket fire with Gaza airstrike

The incident comes amid ongoing protests in the occupied West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and besieged Gaza over US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Israeli military says it has struck Hamas military positions in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants fired a rocket toward southern Israel.

Palestinian health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra had informed AFP earlier today that two men were killed "in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza after an Israeli strike targeted a motorcycle".

Rocket alarm sirens blared across communities surrounding the Gaza Strip, confirmed an IDF spokesperson.

Israel's Channel 2 reported that the terrorists were members of the Islamic Jihad terror group.

According to a written statement from the Egyptian presidency, the two leaders emphasized the importance of Palestinian reconciliation as a "strategic option" in the face of the USA decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA). Therefore, most of the short-range rockets launched over the past few days fell within the Gaza Strip.

On Sunday, the Israeli forces destroyed Hamas tunnels in Gaza, however, announcing that the operation hasn't been linked to the recent clashes between Palestinians and police.
